Cannot Get Enough Of Mel Robbins Teachings

On October 26, 2017, in BLOG, by brendajohima

When you’ve struggled with anxiety and fear for as long as I have, and something, someone comes along that gives you hope, tools and some relief; well, that would be Mel Robbins, I just can’t get enough of it right now.

I’m devouring anything I can find of hers in written word and video, and am doing the best I can to use the 5-4-3-2-1 tool to help change my life, whenever I can remember to use it.

This video of Mel’s on Reframing Anxiety talks about fear and excitement and how they are being displayed in exactly the same way physiologically in the body, and how you can reframe your thoughts and retrain your brain to believe that you are excited! … instead of afraid.

Brilliant.

I’ll need lots of practice, 1) to remember to do it and 2) to master it as a skill but at least I have hope.

Have a watch and listen. Here’s Mel’s video:

The Hummingbird : Elizabeth Gilbert, Passion and Curiosity

On October 25, 2017, in BLOG, by brendajohima

This is me. The Hummingbird.

I am grateful to Oprah for providing the platform via Super Soul Sessions, for me to hear Elizabeth Gilbert talk about the curiosity-driven life.

I have been trying to write about this for months by myself; and I mean months. I have been unable to get the words out with clarity so that it might make sense to you all.

So when I found this, this morning, it was perfect. What Elizabeth describes in this video, is exactly me. This is what I have been trying to say but have been unable to communicate with words.

I would be like the lady in the video (at around the 7:00 point) who wrote Elizabeth that long Facebook post, all while sitting all alone behind a locked door in her hotel room after hearing an “inspiring” talk, and then proceeding to beat self up and to compare to others, all while totally alone.

So instead of me writing more, as I couldn’t say it any better than Elizabeth does here, please have a watch and listen for yourself.

I AM … A Hummingbird.

Thank you Elizabeth.

Always Love,
Brenda

Listening, Falling Apart and Falling Together

On October 25, 2017, in BLOG, by brendajohima

Falling to pieces, falling apart … what if that phase in your life where you feel you are falling apart, is actually the path leading  to the place where you are once again having everything falling together again?

When in the depths of despair and grief, sadness and loss, transformation and change, it can not only feel overwhelming, it is overwhelming. Trying to reframe this period of life when in the midst of it, as something positive, sometimes, seems impossible.

Then, I say, stop trying to. (she tells herself)

BE with the loneliness, the sadness, the grief, the loss, the confusion … let it be. This is something I am trying to learn again and again, as for me, it really is the only way out through to the other side, albeit painful. I would rather not hurt so much.

SARK sent out her newsletter email and she spoke of this also. It’s a good and comforting read if you have a moment, Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy calls it “Permission to Fall To Pieces

For me when having a hard time I am told, “relax” “stop worrying” or “don’t worry” … none of it is helpful when in the throes of change.

What does help? Listening. Deep listening. Feeling heard. Feeling listened to. It’s really that basic. Throw in feeling loved and thats a big bonus.

I wish I could remember where I found this, which was based on research, but basically that THE most important thing that people actually need is to feel heard and to feel listened to. That’s it. It is that simple and that crucial. Yet how many of us are good at that? Most people tend to run from difficult emotions, from within themselves, or when expressed by others.

Give it a try? Who can you listen to today? Make time. Take time. You just might change someones life. Heck, you may even save someones life.

Trust me, you have time.

Always Love,
Brenda

Knowingness

On October 24, 2017, in BLOG, by brendajohima

Knowingness

When you know, you know. Sometimes you know, alone. Sometimes others know with you. Sometimes those with the same knowingness as you, live half way or all the way around the world … or worlds away from you.

Knowingness can be lonely, as it is an inner experience, with body and with heart and mind.

If we are highly sensitive, sometimes we know things that other people simply do not know yet, and no amount of attempting to convince others, will do so. They aren’t there yet.

Then, and sometimes, it’s best to know in silence, and to go about your day, wisdom tucked away.

Always Love,
Brenda

Creativity Is BIG Business

On October 24, 2017, in BLOG, by brendajohima

WOW.

(This is a re-post of an article I wrote in 2007)

Actually I think it may have been 2006, but it was published online in 2007. This was part of my Creative Nudge business, which is no more, as I closed it. I think that I may have been ahead of my time, and I wonder what I could be doing with it right now. However, we don’t live in the past and regret, do we?

So instead, I am re-posting my article here with pride, and although it was written over 10 years ago, I think that much of it still rings true right now today. In fact, creativity is picking up steam in business and in life for most people. Here you go:

Creativity is BIG Business

By Brenda Johima

Finally, creativity has made it to the big leagues in business!

It has always been the artists, poets, writers, dancers, actors, architects, designers, composers and creatives who have lead the way in society with arts and culture, making a tremendous impact on business, politics, environmental issues and it is creativity, innovation and big, great ideas from the arts, which have helped to bring about positive societal change.

Now everybody wants a piece of Creativity In Business, and for good reason. Corporations and businesses want to know how to find it, how to get it, how to create it, and how to retain it in their company. Right now, creativity is the biggest buzzword in business, and more and more creativity websites are popping up online daily.

Creativity is not only for arts and culture. Creativity, innovation, imagination, the ability to invent and to think creatively is crucial for your business. Creativity and Innovation Training is crucial in today’s market, for any small business or corporation to succeed, to be ahead of the game, and on the leading edge.

Creativity and Innovation, and the need to set up a workplace environment, which supports and encourages creative expression in the workplace is no longer an “option” in business.

It is well known FACT now, that creativity IS big business and that creativity is a necessity, if you want to retain employees, and to attract the brightest and most brilliant creatives, to your organization.

Creating the business we dream of requires imagination and creative thinking, combined with the COURAGE to take the action required to get there and to reach our goals.

Every single person, without exception, is creative and the power of creative thinking, brainstorming and idea generation, and when combined with the creative and expressive arts, brings people together, builds strong teams, and helps reach business goals.

Happy and healthy employees are the usual goal for every good employer. Skilled CEOs, managers and employers recognize that every employee is a wellspring of talent.

Every single person has the ability to think creatively, to solve problems, come up with unique and innovative solutions and to generate a multitude of ideas.

Do you know the gifts, talents and dreams (outside of their job description) of every single employee? Are you missing out on the greatest asset that your company has?

How might your company benefit from creativity training, a creativity consultant or creativity coach for your business?

  • innovative ideas
  • better marketing strategies
  • increased productivity
  • product innovation
  • stronger and more unified teams
  • happier employees
  • creative thinking

Creativity is for companies who want:

  • To encourage creativity and innovation in the workplace
  • To encourage and motivate employees to bring their creative talents to work
  • To truly see and experience the value and benefits of creativity, creative thinking and innovation in the workplace
  • To attract and retain amazing employees
  • To create a healthy work environment and combine business, arts and health as a daily way of life
  • To gain creative ideas for business start-up and expansion
  • To achieve business success from new, innovative and creative ideas
  • To create promotional, advertising and marketing plans
  • Assistance with special events planning, marketing and promotions
  • To retain and to have happy staff

Whether you are a very large corporation or a very small business, you benefit from creativity. You already are creative, and business is, in itself, a creative venture. However, there is a far deeper level of creativity and innovation that comes from the tools used in the creative and expressive arts in business.

Through the use of music, movement, writing, photography and art making, the learning is deeper, the courage it takes is greater, the ideas bigger and better, the self awareness higher, and the bonding between staff, employee teams and management, far stronger.

CREATIVITY MAKES BUSINESS EXCITING and if you are going to spend money on creativity coaching and consulting services, that fun creativity also needs to be combined with practical solutions and ideas that get results.

To bring someone to your business who is a specialist in creativity, and who can draw out the very best creative talents in everyone in your company, may be the greatest investment that you can purchase.

An investment in the self, and an investment in the creative and innovative ideas that come from the people that work for you and with you, will not only create an amazing and prosperous work environment, but you will be changing peoples lives by bringing creative and whole people to work, rather than having people leave their incredible talents hidden at home.

Your business will benefit by having “more” of your employees show up for work, bringing a multitude of talents with them.

Do you know what the hobbies, talents, dreams and gifts are of each and every one of your employees? If not, you may be missing out on the full potential of your business, and in making a difference in the lives of the people who work for you and with you.

For the employee, who spends so much of their day at work, this means a more satisfying life experience.

Today in business, when good employers allow more individual expression of creativity at work and encourage it as a way of life, employees have a chance to be happier, more productive and effective, not only on the job, but in life in general.

By choosing to commit daily, to live a creative life in business, we are choosing to be happy. Creativity requires people to be loving and kind because overall, in the moment of the creation of anything that one is passionate about, people are in love with what they are doing.

Creative people tend to be more ‘alive’ and have more energy. Creativity comes from within, from spirit, from soul, from a place other than technique, and from another place other than from usual business practices.

Life is a Blank Canvas. Fill It With Color. Creativity is a way of life. It is not just about doing things and making things. Creativity is a way of being, a way of thinking, a way of living and breathing and a way of moving through your world on a day to day basis.” •

we do not need words to know one another

On October 23, 2017, in BLOG, by brendajohima

Today while walking through the woods, I met a little boy with his nanny.

He was different … and as some might judge, disabled. Yet I did not see him in that way because he had the ability to deeply connect with eye contact with myself and with my standard poodle Teddy; more so than most adults that I have known.

He was a truly a social boy … fully engaging with my dog and with myself … we had a spirit-filled interaction together in the middle of the trail … and the deepest connection took place, all without one word.

We do not need words to know one another, to see each other, to feel. We do not need words. We simply need to slow down and to listen, and to let others … be.

This little boy was completely nonverbal, yet he and I had no problem at all communicating. Also, as soon as my dog Teddy could see what was happening, Teddy sat down to allow the boy to connect in his own way. The boy was gentle with Teddy, and Teddy knew exactly what to do, to just sit calmly, and to be … and to let the boy check him out in his own way. Teddy and the boy had their own language … all without one word. Teddy didn’t need the boy to speak words. Again, no words were needed.

The nanny told me that the boy was “undiagnosed” … I know what that means, but really, philosophically, what did that mean? What does that mean? What if he didn’t need a diagnosis? What if we need those only to help ourselves?

I didn’t need a diagnosis. Teddy didn’t need to know his diagnosis.
Are diagnoses constructed to make US more comfortable?

What IF instead, you just connect? What if it were that simple?
I know that much of the world is not there yet … but some people are.
Are you one?

Always Love,
Brenda
