Fishing Molokai

These photos were taken on a 2008 trip to Molokai, Hawaii, and if you want a Hawaiian vacation away from the crowds, full of peace and serenity, Molokai is the place. These photos bring back great memories, and I would go back to Molokai in a heartbeat. There were two young men at the beach, [...]

These photos were taken on a 2008 trip to Molokai, Hawaii, and if you want a Hawaiian vacation away from the crowds, full of peace and serenity, Molokai is the place. These photos bring back great memories, and I would go back to Molokai in a heartbeat.

There were two young men at the beach, fishing at sunset off of the rocks near the beach, and it was a great chance for me to practice shutter priority and also low light situations, as the sun was going down.

I love how these images have turned out, and the love the ghosted, almost transparent and multiple layered images. (*look for it … it’s there)

Orange Warmth and How Photographers Need Artists

Photographers need artists, and that is why I love everything about this photograph – the image, the art, the composition, the lighting, the expression on the face, the lines, the fact that it is hand made, the fact that it is made from real natural wood … and the color, oooooh, the color, I LOVE the colors, so warm and sunny.

This photo makes me feel really good and happy, just looking at it. It also makes me think of the skill of the original artist who created it, and what it meant to them, and what they were thinking and feeling at the moment of creating the carving.

Photography is an art, and, this photo in particular, is “art of art” and the success of the image comes from my eye for seeing the composition, which came from how the original artist impacted me enough to draw me in, and even want to focus, think, feel, and take a photograph.

Photographers need artists in every medium and from every modality to inspire, to collaborate, to make us think and feel, so we can take better and better photographs over time.

Herring and Seagulls on Vancouver Island

Every year, it’s an exciting day on Vancouver Island, in Baynes Sound, with great viewpoints from between Denman Island and Hornby Island, from Fanny Bay to Bowser to Qualicum Bay … when fisheries allow gillnets and seine to fish herring.

Sea lions, seals, bald eagles, loads of herring, tons of fishing boats of all sizes, and hundreds of seagulls can be found, during a hub of activity. A photographers delight.

Every year I’m out with my camera, capturing the action, and last year, my photographs were in the newspaper.

This year, however, I missed it … I think I was in Mexico when it happened. Hmmmm. Mexico, sun tan, swimming in warm tropical waters, or herring? Well … I chose Mexico this year.

Anyway, although I missed the main herring run, the sea lions and seagulls were still feasting a couple of days ago, and I got a small glimpse of a remnant of that beautiful milky turquoise herring enriched waters on Vancouver Island. The color, simply is amazing, and I was happy just to see a small bit even, this year.

Enjoy.

I LOVE DOGS.

The majority of my dog photographs are posted on my other website, phoDOGraphy.ca … please have a look if you love dogs, or want to book a dog photography session with your dog or puppy. I travel to you!

These next two images are part of my travel photography, taken during a 2008 trip to Molokai, Hawaii. This rural blue-eyed dog was timid, as you can see, but did stick around long enough for me to get a couple of photos.

What a great way to practice wildlife photography, at Xcaret, Mexico. It was a joy to be this close to jaguar, for the first time in my life.

I would much prefer to see them in the wild, where they belong, but having never seen a jaguar before at all in real life, it was a very special day trip, for sure.

The patterns on the fur, are stunning, and the strength, the power, the muscle, of these animals is incredible.

Enjoy.

Why Not to Title Your Art Piece

On March 19, 2010, in Ink, by admin

If I had titled this piece, when it was for sale in a public art show, it may not have sold. We will never know that for sure, of course.

I was at home, and a woman phoned me asking the price of one of my paintings during an art show. She said, “you know, the one with the fish in it” … “the one with the fish in the middle of the painting.” Honestly, out of 24 paintings at that show, I had absolutely no clue which painting she was speaking of. I told her I would give her a call back, hopped in my car, and zipped over to the venue.

What do you know? I had painted a “fish painting” and I never even saw it!

The creative process travels a unique journey each time, and during my creative process for this piece, I used Yupo paper and an acrylic ink, and always, as it is with Yupo, it was an amazing process to see it come together right before my very eyes. Those who paint with ink on Yupo know, that yes, you can control the flow of the ink if you choose, but it is a heck of a lot more fun and creative to be in the unknown, and let the ink flow where it would like to go, and to not control the ink.

So the story is, sadly, the woman’s husband had been a commercial fisherman, and he died in a tragic fishing accident.

She purchased my painting as memory of him, and it now hangs proudly, on a prominent wall in her living room. I am touched that I have made a difference in her life with my art, and I learned a lesson, I, in general, do NOT title my art pieces, despite what experts have told me to, which is to title every piece. In this situation, I am glad I trusted my own intuition and my own beliefs, and to not title the piece.

My goal with my art, is that the meaning comes from the viewer. I have done my job well as an artist, if each individual person creates meaning for themselves with each piece, each viewer will see something different, and that, to me, is creativity in action, and is art, which makes people think, to dream, and to see in new ways.

This piece, now might be titled, “A Fisherman’s Friend” but for me, it remains untitled, and with love.

Of course, I love the abstract in so many art forms, so it suits my passion for it well. Here is an example, taken at night, on Granville Island, in Vancouver, and I have titled it “A Light Rain.”
