Dolphins

These photographs of dolphins were taken at Puerto Adventuras, in Mexico, in 2010. Puerto Adventuras is on the Riviera Maya, between Tulum and Playa Del Carmen, and is a gated community, where I stayed on my vacation, and LOVED it!

I had fully intended to swim with the dolphins during my trip to Mexico, but to be honest, I just could not do it, once I saw them in the concrete pens.

I must admit, I LOVED being able to go for a walk every evening, just minutes from my hotel, and observe and photograph dolphins … so close up, and at no additional cost. Most places charge a fortune to get that close to dolphins. So there is a plus side, the ability to watch, observe, photograph, and to be educated about dolphins, which is wonderful.

As a photographer, to be close to any wildlife at any time, is an amazing opportunity to me, and to have the chance daily, to practice things like TV mode (on the Canon) … shutter priority, or AV mode (on a Canon) … aperture priority, F-Stops and aperture settings, with marine mammals that move very quickly, and in water, is a fantastic way to improve and practice photographic techniques. Moving objects and water, two of the trickiest to photograph well. And, I had a blast!

I do not support dolphins in captivity (and did not swim with them for that reason), however, I am torn, because I did love being with them and photographing them. Would I swim with them in the wild, in their own natural habitat? Absolutely, and I look forward to it … it’s on my list.

The eyes of a dolphin, when they look at you (or into you), one never forgets. It’s almost as if they can see right through you and read your mind. Incredible creatures, that I LOVE.

And as a swimmer, I can appreciate the power of the dolphin’s swimming abilities … just fantastic to watch. You can see the power of the tail in this image, and learn that the major propulsion is on the up stroke, not the down of the stroke.

So if you are looking to improve your swimming technique, watch a dolphin, get a pair of fins, and imitate. Your technique will improve tenfold.

I really do believe that dolphins love people.

Or shall I say, they know, the dolphins know and love the people who love them. I do believe that they can tell the difference, and I do hope that our world moves forward in greater efforts to save these amazing animals that we are so fortunate to have inhabit our planet.
